Working toward AKC Agility Nationals is exciting.
It is also one of those goals that can make your brain start opening too many tabs at once.
Did those runs help?
Did that QQ count?
Do Premier Qs count?
How many points do we have now?
Are Regular and Preferred tracked separately?
Are we actually on pace, or do I just feel like we are?
If you have ever tried to figure this out from memory, a notes app, and a pile of trial results, you are not alone.
The 2027 AKC National Agility Championship will be held March 11-14, 2027, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The qualifying period for 2027 is December 1, 2025 through November 30, 2026. Always check AKC's official qualification document for the year you are working toward, because requirements can change.
The Big Picture
For 2027 AKC Agility Nationals qualification, you are not just tracking one thing.
You are usually watching a combination of Double Qs, MACH or PACH points, Master Standard qualifying scores, Master JWW qualifying scores, Premier Standard legs, Premier JWW legs, and whether your dog is qualifying in Regular or Preferred.
That is why this can get confusing.
A regular title tracker may answer, “Did we earn this title yet?”
A Nationals tracker has to answer something more specific:
Are the right kinds of results adding up during the correct qualifying period?
A Personal Note From Me and Moose
Moose and I are trying to qualify for AKC Agility Nationals for the first time, so this is not just a random topic I wanted to write about.
I am right in the middle of tracking this too.
And honestly, that is what made me realize how much mental space this goal can take up. It is not just about going to trials and hoping for good runs. It is also keeping track of points, QQs, Premier legs, what counts, what does not, and whether we are actually moving closer.
I want to enjoy running Moose. I want to celebrate the good weekends, learn from the messy ones, and stay focused on becoming a better team. I do not want to spend the whole season wondering if I forgot to add something or if we are closer than I think.
That is the heart of why tracking this matters. Not because the numbers are more important than the dog, but because having the numbers organized makes it easier to enjoy the dog.
What Counts for Regular AKC Agility Nationals Qualification?
For the 2027 AKC National Agility Championship Regular class requirements, teams must earn the required progress during the stated qualifying period. AKC lists the Regular class requirements as 7 Double Qs from Regular classes and 550 total MACH/Premier points.
Premier Qs can also matter.
For 2027 qualification, AKC says a combination of 2 Premier Standard legs and 2 Premier JWW legs may replace up to 2 Double Qs. The Premier Standard and Premier JWW legs do not have to be earned at the same trial. AKC also states that every Premier Q earned during the qualifying period is awarded 15 points toward the NAC point requirements, with no limit on Premier points used toward qualification.
That means Regular qualification tracking is not just:
Do I have enough QQs?
It is more like:
Do I have enough QQs, enough points, and any Premier legs or Premier points that can help?
What Counts for Preferred AKC Agility Nationals Qualification?
Preferred has its own qualification path, and this is important: Regular points do not transfer to Preferred eligibility.
For the 2027 Preferred class requirements, AKC lists 7 Double Qs from Preferred classes and 550 total PACH/Premier Preferred points during the qualifying period. AKC also says a combination of 2 Premier Preferred Standard legs and 2 Premier Preferred JWW legs may replace up to 2 Double Qs, and those legs do not need to be earned at the same trial.
AKC also states that every Premier Preferred Q earned during the qualifying period is awarded 15 points toward the NAC point requirements, with no limit on Premier Preferred points used toward qualification.
So if your dog is running Preferred, your tracking should stay separate from Regular.
That part matters.
A mixed-up spreadsheet can make this way harder than it needs to be.
What Should You Track After Each Trial?
After each AKC agility trial, you do not need to write a novel. You just need enough information to understand what the run counted toward.
For 2027 AKC Agility Nationals qualification, I would track:
That last one is easy to forget.
A beautiful run outside the qualifying period may still matter for titles, confidence, and your dog's journey, but it may not count toward that specific Nationals qualification year.
Why Premier Can Make Tracking Feel Messy
Premier is one of those things that can make people second-guess their math.
For 2027, Premier can help in two ways.
First, a combination of Premier Standard and Premier JWW legs may replace up to two Double Qs, depending on whether you are tracking Regular or Preferred.
Second, Premier Qs can add points toward the NAC point requirement.
That is useful, but it also gives you more things to track.
If you are only writing “Premier Q” in your notes, future you may still have to figure out:
Was it Standard or JWW?
Was it Regular or Preferred?
Did I already count it?
Did it help replace a QQ?
Did I add the points?
This is the part where a tracker starts to feel less like a nice extra and more like a relief.
The Easy Mistakes to Avoid
The biggest mistake is waiting until the end of the qualifying period to figure it all out.
That is when you start digging through results, checking dates, adding points, and wondering if you missed something from six months ago.
A few other easy mistakes:
AKC's agility FAQ says exhibitors can search for qualifying scores and titles through AKC's Event Awards Search and through the Online Store for an individual dog's complete show record. That can be useful, but it still helps to keep your own running progress if you want to know where you stand during the season.
How a Tracker Makes This Easier
A good AKC Agility Nationals qualification tracker should not make you enter everything twice.
That is the whole point.
If you are already adding your AKC agility entries, those same entries should help update Nationals qualification progress. That way, your title tracking and Nationals tracking are connected.
You add the agility result once.
The tracker helps show what it counted toward.
That can make a huge difference during the season because you are not waiting until the end to ask, “Are we close?”
You can check as the progress builds.
Regular or Preferred: Keep the Path Clear
If your dog runs Regular, track Regular.
If your dog runs Preferred, track Preferred.
That may sound obvious, but it matters because the requirements and point tracking are separate. For 2027, AKC specifically notes that MACH/Premier points earned from Regular classes may not be transferred for Preferred eligibility.
So your tracker should make it clear which path your dog is on.
That way, you are not accidentally mixing numbers that should stay separate.
The Simple Version
For 2027 AKC Agility Nationals qualification, you are mainly tracking the right results during the right qualifying period.
For Regular teams, that means tracking Double Qs, MACH/Premier points, Master Standard and Master JWW Qs, and Premier Standard and Premier JWW legs during the qualifying period.
For Preferred teams, that means tracking the Preferred version of those results, including Preferred Double Qs and PACH/Premier Preferred points.
Do not wait until the end of the season if you can avoid it.
Track as you go.
Your future self will be much happier.
