Dog Sport Glossary

Your first premium list can read like a secret code, with FEO, 24C, T2B and move-ups in the first few lines. And once you start entering more than one organization, you find that the same word can mean one thing at one trial and something else at the next. This page covers the words you'll see on premium lists, results sheets and ringside, sport by sport, with the source for each one linked right under it.

How to Use This Glossary

Jump to a letter, or pick a sport to see only its terms. When a word changes meaning between sports or organizations, the entry splits it into parts, so read the one for the trial you're entering. Every definition is our own summary, not an official one, and for any rule, the rulebook linked under it is what counts.

A

A, B and C classesChanges by organization

Agility, Barn Hunt, Obedience, Rally · AKC, ASCA, BHA, UKC, WCRL

Agility: Splits of a class by experience. AKC Novice A is for an untitled dog shown by its owner or a household member who's never titled a dog. UKC's A sections exclude trainers, instructors and judges, and runs in A or B both count toward the title.

Barn Hunt: In Barn Hunt, every dog starts each level in the A class until it earns that level's title. After that it can run B at that level or any lower one, working toward X titles.

Obedience and rally: In AKC obedience and rally, A is for new owner handlers whose dog lacks that title; B is open to anyone. ASCA and UKC add a C class where titled dogs keep showing. WCRL's A is for dogs without that level's title.

Dog Sport Glossary Questions

What does Q mean in dog agility?+

A Q is a qualifying run, one good enough to count toward a title. In AKC agility that’s 85 of 100 points from Novice to Excellent and a perfect 100 in Master and Premier, while in UKI and USDAA Standard it means zero faults. Each organization sets its own standard.

What is a QQ in agility?+

In AKC agility, a double Q is qualifying in Master Standard and Master JWW on the same day, in Regular or Preferred. QQs count toward the MACH, PACH, PAX and Nationals. AKC rally and obedience, ASCA rally and WCRL use the same name for a different pair of classes.

What does FEO mean in dog agility?+

For Exhibition Only: a run that can’t qualify or place, used to practice in the trial ring. In AKC agility it’s up to the club, and you may reward with a toy that stays in your hand. UKI has a similar practice run called NFC.

What is SCT in agility?+

Standard course time, the time a dog must beat to avoid time faults. The judge measures the course and divides its length by a set number of yards per second for the class, level and height. In AKC Time 2 Beat, the fastest clean run sets it instead.

What is a leg in dog sports?+

One qualifying score that counts toward a title. CPE, UKC, Barn Hunt and NADD count titles in legs, while AKC’s rules mostly say qualifying score, and NADAC, UKI and ASCA agility count points instead.

What does NFC mean in agility?+

Not For Competition, UKI’s practice run. You declare NFC before the run, then you can use a toy (not a noisy one) and even a helper in the ring. It’s UKI’s closest match to AKC’s FEO.

Keep Every Title in One Place

Once you know the words, the next job is the counting. Log each Q after the trial and Dog Title Tracker keeps track of the Qs, points and titles for AKC agility, obedience and rally, ASCA agility and rally, UKI, CPE, USDAA and NADAC agility, Fast CAT, NADD dock diving and Barn Hunt.
